The FPB is calling for a reduction in the burden of legislation, which for many firms is a barrier to growth, and for a greater understanding of the impact that late payment and increases in tax have on smaller firms.
Mr Blizzard was elected in 1997 and has held various senior roles in the Labour Government, including Parliamentary Private Secretary to Douglas Alexander, who was Secretary of State for Transport in 2006-2007. Mr Blizzard's interests include employment, energy, education and foreign affairs.
"We have many successful small businesses in Waveney and I know how important they are for the local economy," said Mr Blizzard. "I fully support the FPB's campaign because I want to do all that I can as an MP to help local companies flourish and prosper. I'm also pleased the Government's Enterprise Strategy shows a commitment to making sure the regulatory environment does not become a barrier for small companies."
Mr Blizzard added: "I don't want to see a return to the days when unemployment in Waveney was as high as 11.5%, like in 1997, and the only way to create jobs is to have successful businesses! I was pleased to see unemployment in Waveney drop below 3% recently, but it's vital that new legislation doesn't stifle enterprise and growth so we can keep unemployment low."
On receiving the MP's signed pledge, the FPB's Chief Executive, Phil Orford, said: "Bob Blizzard's signature adds even more momentum to our Think Smallest First campaign. Having such an experienced and well-rounded MP as Mr Blizzard on board will be of great help in ensuring that the message of Think Smallest First is heard."
The FPB's Think Smallest First campaign was launched in June 2008, and has gained cross-party support from MPs and Ministers. In June 2008, the FPB posted a petition on the Downing Street website, which now has more than 800 signatures from owners of small businesses and members of the public.
Mr Blizzard was educated at Birmingham University. He is married and has two children. Mr Blizzard enjoys walking and skiing, and also watching rugby and cricket. |
