A member of the FPB has saved £33,000 after a massive bill handed to them by Powergen was slashed. Wildwoods Water Gardens Ltd of Enfield, Middlesex contacted the FPB when they received a demand for £64,000 in November 2006. Wildwoods called the members' helpline, which advised them to speak to FPB partner Utility Options, an independent energy consultancy, which offers members of the FPB the best possible prices for their electricity and gas.

David Monk is General Manager of Wildwoods. He said he is delighted with the result:

"Utility Options took up our case immediately, I cannot praise them too highly for their knowledge, professionalism and enthusiasm. They clearly understood more about electricity charging than anyone at Powergen and were instrumental in reducing the bill to £31,000 – an outcome way beyond our most optimistic expectations."

The problem stemmed from the complicated nature of Wildwoods' electricity meter and the incorrect billing that Powergen had been applying for around 5 years.

Jane Bates from Utility Options said: "Although it took some negotiating I am pleased to have saved Wildwoods a significant amount of money."

Utility Options finds the right suppliers to match customers' needs. The company has also been able to make savings for FPB members by knowing what the market trends will be. Through recommending the length of a contract to take maximum benefit from these fluctuations, it has been able to optimise savings. Furthermore, there is no charge to FPB members wishing to use these services. Utility Options is happy to claim a small commission from the supplier when it places business with them.

Mr Monk said he would advise companies struggling with utility bills to seek advice: "We would not hesitate to recommend Utility Options or indeed the FPB and would like to go on record as commending Jane Bates in particular for her superb work in this matter."
